What can we hope for in the iPhone 5?

Apple's iPhone has been an incredible success - no doubt about it.  First released in 2007, these smartphones have amounted to approximately half of Apple's total sales.  Apple is still looking to innovate and ride profits for this product.  Reuters stated that South Korea's Maeli Business Newspaper reports orders from Apple for parts to produce their new iPhone, which is anticipated to be released in the second quarter of 2012.  Since the iPhone 4S was just released in October of last year, what could a new iPhone possibly include?

A new design

iPhone 5 concept design
The next iPhone is going to need some external changes to appear fresh in the market, especially since the iPhone 4S recycled the design of the iPhone 4 that was released 2 years ago.  A new design would be important to encourage Android and Blackberry users to make the switch to Apple products.  The new iPhone is also going to obviously have a better display.  The new iPad premiered the Retina Display technology, which features over four times as many pixels as the iPad 2.  This same technology will also provide stunning displays in the new iPhone.  The Maeli Business Newspaper announced that the new iPhone will also feature a 4.6" display.  This is nearly an inch larger than the current 3.7" display, but it will be necessary to become more competitive in the smartphone industry.  Large screens make it easier to navigate and watch videos on smartphones; and this has been something that has given Android an edge with recent models.  This iPhone may also use the same curved glass as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which makes sense for ergonomic reasons.

Improved performance

In order to create a demand by consumers, the new iPhone must also outperform the 4S model.  As such, rumors have it that it may not be too early to hypothesize about a quad-core smartphone.  Nevertheless, the dual-core A5X chip that is in the new iPad would be more than enough to power the Retina Display of a new iPhone.  This could be more than enough to fend off competitors.  Along with the improved processor, it is anticipated that the camera will be upgraded to an 8 megapixel version that still offers HD recording options.  With all of these performance boosts, Apple would also have to consider a better battery in the iPhone to ensure that it still lasts as long as their other products (and competes with the Droid RAZR Maxx and other long-lasting smartphones).

Tell us what you think!

Do you think that an iPhone with the proposed features would be enough for you to get rid of your 4S (or make the switch from an Android or Blackberry device)?  Or is this just another product with minimal changes and a great marketing strategy to get consumers hooked?  Leave us a comment with your opinion!

  1. I'm still wondering about the display size. While I would favor a larger display, the attitude of Apple could be also to just stick with the old size. It's not what the user wants but what Apple tells what the users should want .... so this may either be the best rumor of the year or we will see some incredible change :)

    1. Personally, I own the Android HTC Droid Thunderbolt. One of the main reason I liked the phone so much was for the larger display. However, after using other's iPhones, I prefer the smaller look and feel much better. Apple needs to stick with what they know!

    2. I personally would have to disagree with Alyssa. Towards the end of Steve Jobs' life, he finally made plans to introduce a larger screen size as part of his plan for the iPhone line - which would tell customers that they need a bigger phone. As of right now, large phones (many Androids, etc.) run at 4.3" displays. The additional quarter inch proposed by the new iPhone wouldn't make that great of an addition on top of what we are already accustomed to. However, I think that the combination of better features (Retina Display, curved glass, stronger materials, etc.) will make this phone very desirable by the public. It will definitely be an owner's dream product for entertainment purposes.

I think that Apple definitely needs to make a drastic change in order to remain relevant in the smartphone market. The minimal changes from iPhone 4 to 4S might have been more disappointing than anything. I think that new technology could be an aggressive move that recaptures some lost territory in the smartphone industry (and it would probably be enough for me to make the switch).
